Locorotondo: The Round Jewel of the Valle d’Itria, Just Minutes from Trullo M

Whitewashed lanes, local markets, wine and views.

Some Italian villages ask you to tick off sights. Locorotondo asks you to slow down. Perched on a hilltop in the heart of Puglia’s Valle d’Itria, it is officially listed among I Borghi più belli d’Italia – the most beautiful villages in Italy. And if you are staying at Trullo M, it is only about 6 km away.

Why Locorotondo is worth the visit

A town shaped like its name. Locorotondo comes from the late Latin Locus Rutundus, meaning “round place”. As the walled village grew towards the top of the hill, it took on the circular shape you can still see today.

Architecture you won’t find anywhere else. The old town is known for its cummerse: narrow houses topped with steep, sloping limestone roofs that give the historic centre its crisp, angular profile – unlike any other town in the Valle d’Itria.

No checklist needed. Part of Locorotondo’s charm is that it has few must-see attractions. It is a place to wander whitewashed lanes, browse small ateliers, enjoy an aperitivo in the sun and dine outdoors in quiet side streets.

What to see and do

•       Centro storico – a maze of white lanes, crumbling façades and baroque archways.

•       Chiesa Madre di San Giorgio Martire – the town’s main church and one of its top-rated sights.

•       Church of San Rocco, Palazzo Morelli and the Civic Tower – highlights of the historic centre.

•       Sanctuary of the Madonna della Catena and Trullo Marziolla – two cultural landmarks just outside the old town.

•       Panoramic views over the Valle d’Itria – a green patchwork of trulli, olive groves and vineyards.

•       Local crafts – ceramics, embroidered textiles and traditional objects.

•       Wine and olive oil – vineyards cover about 15% of the land around Locorotondo; taste local wines in town or join a vineyard tour.

•       E-bike tours – guided rides linking Locorotondo with other Valle d’Itria villages, often with food or wine tastings.

Market days: shop like a local

The weekly market (every Friday morning). Every Friday, Locorotondo hosts its weekly market, where farmers and vendors from across the valley set up stalls with seasonal fruit and vegetables, local cheeses, household linens, clothing and everyday ceramics. Arrive early – between 8 and 10 am – for the fullest stalls and the liveliest atmosphere; by around 1 pm vendors begin packing up. Bring cash and a reusable bag, then combine your visit with a morning stroll through the old town before the day-trippers arrive. Tip: on public holidays the market may move to another day, so check the Comune di Locorotondo website before you go.
